| The clivia plant is indigenous to South Africa and we can be very proud of this beautiful flower that graces many gardens in our country as well as a number of gardens in America, Belgium, Australia, China and on a smaller scale some other countries. The normal
clivias discovered in the wild were mostly the orange and yellow varieties
but some pastels, red and very rare plants were discovered like yellow
nobilis and caulescens. The plants originally discovered have been improved over a number of years to be able to present a wide range of colours and even crosses between the four types that we have known about for years. Recently a fifth type was discovered, which has opened up new possibilities. Clivia Miniata , which is probably the most popular, carries upright florets whilst the other four five types have pendulous florets. Clivia Gardenii flowers during our Autumn, whilst Miniata, Caulescens, Nobilis and Mirabilis flower in Spring. Clivia seed is usually harvested during June and sold/exchanged amongst growers until September each year. With this exchange of seed growers all attempt to to grow the "best" Clivia. I am a proud member of the E.P. Clivia Club which has approximately 200 members. I would like to encourage all Clivia lovers to join a club near you. Please have a look at the plants on offer and feel free to contact me with any enquiries. I also have some other indigenous plants on offer besides clivias such as miniature white Agapanthus, lemon scented Pelargoniams, Streptocarpus, Haworthias and some Gasterias. These plants were grown from seed or cuttings and not taken out of their natural environment. |
